◊ An item has been added to the Administrator’s Activity Log dialog box: you can now choose to turn activity logging on or off.
◊ You can now unlock a read-only folder from the desktop by command-clicking on it. The password prompt will appear.
◊ If you use Apple’s System 7, custom icons for locked and read-only folders will now appear on the desktop.
◊ If the System Folder (or, for System 7, the Control Panels folder) is locked, the FolderBolt startup device cannot be bypassed (Option key down at startup won’t prevent loading).
◊◊◊ GENERAL HINTS & INFORMATION ◊◊◊
◊ If your disk has any minor catalog problems (something that can occur over time), when you run FolderBolt it may indicate it has encountered difficulty with the disk structure. If this problem occurs, perform the following steps:
1. If you have any folders currently locked, run the Administrator and perform an Override without a snapshot.
2. Run an application like Apple’s Disk First Aid or Norton Utilities for the Macintosh to detect and correct any structural problems.
3. Continue using FolderBolt as usual.
◊ The very first time a newly-installed copy of FolderBolt loads at startup time, you’ll notice that it takes slightly longer (because of an initialization process) than subsequent startups.
◊ F.Y.I., when you use FolderBolt on a disk, an invisible info/preference file named “FBinfo.xxxxxx” (where xxxxxx = your serial number) is created at the root level of the disk. Although this file is not required for security, you’ll want to include it as part of your normal disk backup.
◊ You can use version 1.02 to unlock folders locked with version 1.01 & 1.0. But you won’t be able to use the (older) 1.01 or 1.0 to unlock (newer) 1.02-locked folders. To avoid this confusion, use the Installer to update EVERY copy of 1.01 you have.
◊◊◊ THIRD PARTY PRODUCTS & FOLDERBOLT ◊◊◊
◊ There is an incompatibility with FolderBolt and TOPS 3.0, often preventing FolderBolt from writing to the disk. This problem is corrected in TOPS 3.1. Use that version instead.
◊ Older versions of Suitcase™ (older than version 1.2.6) are incompatible with FolderBolt. Use a newer copy of Suitcase instead (the current version is 1.2.10).
◊ Note that OnCue™’s or HandOff II’s automatic application launching function will still work if the application is in a locked folder. If you’re running under System 7.0, however, this anomaly does not occur.
◊ SmartAlarms™ requires that it load BEFORE FolderBolt at startup time.
◊ Conflict with FolderBolt and QuickDex™ resolved in this version.
◊◊◊ System 7.0-specific items ◊◊◊
◊ Running under 7.0, FolderBolt 1.02-locked folders will have distinctive icons. These icons will not appear on folders currently locked with the older version, 1.01, until they are unlocked & locked again using 1.02. An easy way to get all your icons to reflect their locked/unlocked states is to perform an Administrator 1.02 Override with a snapshot immediately followed by a Restore. The folders will be restored/relocked using version 1.02’s method. The desktop will then show FolderBolt’s custom icons for locked & read-only folders.
◊ If you run File Sharing under 7.0, the small icons of a pencil & folder that ordinarily appear in the read-only folder window’s title bar will not display. However, the icon of the read-only folder itself will remain.
◊ If a folder is shared using 7.0’s File Sharing mechanism, it cannot be locked or unlocked using FolderBolt until it is “un-shared.” A message suggesting this will appear if un/locking is attempted.
◊ If FolderBolt’s Control Panel is open, locking and unlocking from the desktop will display a message requesting that you close the cdev first.
◊ Odd 7.0 bug: if you name a folder with the characters “#2” as part of the name, and you turn File Sharing on, FolderBolt cannot work with that folder from the desktop. Either rename it or use the Control Panel. This bug has been reported to Apple.
◊ The system utility “Find File” had some incompatibilities with FolderBolt which are now fixed in System 7.0.
◊ FolderBolt 1.02 can lock 7.0’s System Folder supplementary folders (Control Panels, Apple Menu Items, Extensions, etc.) while still maintaining their functionality.
◊ FolderBolt v1.02 is compatible with System 7’s File Sharing and Virtual Memory capabilities, as well as 32-bit addressing.
